Clean water sources that need protection

76 drinking-water sources under documented pressure: dune catchments, aquifers, springs, lakes, river intakes and connected wetlands. The list starts with the Netherlands, then the rest of Europe and major sites worldwide, with the threats and protections named in public sources.

Any one of them can anchor a chapter: residents, farmers and nearby facility teams working on a single shared supply.

How this list was made

  • Sites were compiled from widely documented public cases and matched to one public reference page each (mostly Wikipedia, plus RIVM). Every link was checked on 30 Oct 2026.
  • Coordinates come from the linked page. They are left blank for rivers and large basins, where a single point would be a river mouth or an arbitrary centre.
  • “Supplies” is given only where the linked page commonly cites it.
  • Threat tags group the listed threats into eight types and link each to its causes in the causal tree.

Caveats

  • Threat and protection fields are summaries, not legal designations. Check each source before citing.
  • The Dutch rows are site-level examples, not the full provincial register of waterwingebieden and grondwaterbeschermingsgebieden, which each province keeps.
  • Some lakes and wetlands are listed for their role in regional water security rather than as direct public-supply intakes.
